A Very Special Arrival with The Keeper

Hello all.
If you've been following this blog, you'll know me as "The Keeper."
I always promised that I would leave this blog strictly to my dolls to run, but today I decided to make an exception. (This is also the very first time I've ever done a "box opening." This arrival is quite special!)

(As a side note, you'll have to forgive me for Pastel's lack of updates this summer. She has had stories to share, but I have not given her the time she needed to share them. With this new arrival, I imagine that will change.)

Today I had a very special package arrive at my doorstep. For a long time, I thought this day would never come.

I'll back up a little though in order to explain why this package was so meaningful to me.
(Confession: I'm a bit shy about sharing this story with you all. I'm trying to convince myself that if you're a visitor of this blog,  you must also be a "doll person" and you will get where I'm coming from with all this.)

When I was in grade school, I was a dreamer. I always had my "head in the clouds." I created this whole little world in my head, and I was constantly drawing the fantastic creatures and beings that lived in it. It was my little escape, and it made me so happy.

And then one night nearly a decade ago, something terrible happened. It was so terrible, it completely shattered me. I was a different person for several years after. I lost so many people that were once close to me during this time. I felt like everything was spiraling out of my control. The worst part? My little world, my special place, vanished. For years, I stopped drawing completely. I couldn't create anything. I was completely lost.

Life isn't always like a fairytale. Something didn't happen to magically bring me back. Things slowly improved as time passed. I began to pick up the pieces again. During this time, I got married, bought a house, and had a beautiful son. Even still, I was missing something important.

In October of 2009, just a few months after my son was born, I taught myself to sew a plushie. That was the first step at truly recovering myself. It was the first time in a long time that I created anything. It was through the crafting sites that I discovered the world of BJD's, and of course, Den of Angels.

I had always loved dolls. My room used to be filled with porcelain dolls (that were sadly all put away when my teenage self deemed them "uncool"). These ball jointed dolls were like none I had ever seen before. I was eager to read everything about them. I spent hours and hours reading the discussion threads of DoA.

And that's when I discovered a little thread about Charles' Creature Cabinet Fireflies.
I was sucked in immediately. Here was a community of people that remembered how to play. There was something about this thread that was unlike any of the other doll threads I had read. It was like entering a magical world. And that's when something truly amazing (for me, at least) happened. I pulled out my dusty sketchbook and drew a picture of a firefly. I desperately wanted this doll that had inspired such a fantastic community, and that at long last had inspired me.

Unfortunately, I was just a few months too late. It was at this point that CCC started having issues with getting dolls out. I won't go into the details as I imagine many of you reading this already know it. I was heartbroken not only for myself, but even more so for all the poor people that were out so much money. I silently watched as this amazing community rallied together and managed to get many of these dolls to their rightful homes. It was truly a wonderful thing to see.

I watched several fireflies go up for sale as time passed. With each one, my heart sank a little more. They were selling second hand for stunning prices. I think the first one I saw was in the six hundred dollar range, and the next in the nine hundred, with one even going into the thousands. I knew there was no chance I would bring home a firefly.

I went back to ghosting the firefly thread. It took me nearly three years to finally join in, by the way. The community had come to mean so much to me, that I was terrified if I joined, I would spoil the magic. I had already tried to join a different doll discussion, and had had a negative experience. I couldn't bear the thought of losing sight of this magical little world this little doll had inspired.

When rumors started that Grace at JPOP was going to produce the fireflies again, I was beyond thrilled. Finally, here was just the tiniest glimmer of hope. It took awhile even after that, but that hope was enough for me. I put every spare penny and dollar I could find into a jar so that when the dolls went up for sale, I would have the money. I must've been one of the first orders placed, because I checked out the second I got the announcement!

And that brings me to today, and the arrival of a very long awaited little doll. She may be "just a doll" for many, but she represents so much more to me. I will always look at her and be reminded of the wonderful little community that inspired me to create once again. In the years that passed after I discovered that firefly faerie thread, I have started drawing and painting again, I have created countless plush, and have even started my own little business selling my creations.

And so, I am so very happy to introduce you to Sparkle.

May she always remind me to never again let anyone (or anything) dull my sparkle.

(Confession: Yes, I got teary eyed as I did this very long awaited box opening.)

Trip to Hot Springs - Day 2

Our second day of the trip, we visited Garvan Woodland Gardens.
We thought we were just going to spend one...maybe two hours there. We ended up spending three hours there, and we barely scratched the surface!
Next time we go, we're going to devote an entire day to this place. It was amazing!

(Sorry, you're going to get lots of scenic pictures in this post. This place was too gorgeous not to take photos non stop!)

This guy was gorgeous and he knew it. He was a bit of a show off...but I guess I can't really blame him.

Look! I found a tree my size!
I couldn't resist the temptation to climb a tree.

I enjoyed relaxing by the brook.
It was SO nice not to have to worry about anything for a few hours.

It was so peaceful.

The next bridge was my absolute favorite place. It was called the Half Moon Bridge...and it was gorgeous!

I found a perfect little spot just my size to relax for a little while.

There was this cute little train garden!

I wanted to ride the train and visit the little town, but there were signs everywhere that made it pretty clear I could do nothing of the sort. Oh well.

Before we left, we visited the Anthony Chapel.

Would you believe I was so taken by the beauty of this place, I forgot to have my picture taken!?
Oh well...maybe next time.

This is the bell tower outside of the chapel.
It was playing all sorts of pretty hymns as we approached.

It was a short weekend trip, but it was pretty amazing.
Now I'm ready to go on my next adventure!
(At least its starting to get warm out...so we might actually start leaving the house again, lol.)

Trip to Hot Springs! Day One

After months of being stuck inside with nothing but work to do, The Keeper finally took me on a trip!
Her husband surprised her with a trip to Hot Springs, AR to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary.
With it being their anniversary and all, I thought for sure they wouldn't let me go...but they were more than happy to bring me along.

We first visited Hot Springs Mountain Tower.

Yep! We went all the way to the top!
I didn't take any pictures of myself up there because it was SO windy!
But this was the view:

After we came down the tower, I did make sure to get a picture of myself on the mountain!

Next we visited the little aquarium. There wasn't much to it, but it was still fun.
I loved the lion fish.

This great big tortoise was my favorite though. She was so sweet...she even gave me a ride!

Next, we took a stroll down the main street. We did some shopping, and ate lunch.
There were lots of pretty places to stop and take photos as we walked.

We ended our first day at The Gangster Museum...and you'll never believe who I met there!

Yep, that's me and Al Capone!

Our second day was at Garvan Woodland Gardens, but that place was so gorgeous, I'm going to have to give it its own blog post! Be back soon with the rest. :)

Things are getting a bit hairy around here...

I have been SO busy lately.
This new job of mine is hard work, but it's pretty fun...

As you can see, I've had my hands full with these Pocket Fluffs!

These guys have just graduated from my training program and have all been properly groomed. Time to get them all adopted out to new homes!

These two are a special pair, off to a fellow doll friend of mine! I know she's going to have lots of fun with them!

I've also discovered that Pocket Fluffs don't just come in one size. This little guy was the runt.

I thought he needed some special attention since he's so little.

Luckily, things have quieted down now. All but two have been adopted into new homes.
The Keeper promised me I'd get a little break after this...and maybe even some time for a real adventure again!

Pssst...want a Pocket Fluff of your own?
Their adoption site is here!

Monster Grooming

You know, I try to keep busy around here.
It's been tough during these cold months because none of us have wanted to get out of the house.

I think I've found my new calling though...

These new little monsters have started showing up around here.
The Keeper calls them Pocket Fluffs.

With all that fur, they shed A LOT.
I decided someone was going to have to start grooming them or we'd all be knee deep in monster fur.

Luckily, this little guy seemed to enjoy the attention.
It really was pretty fun.

I also found that Pocket Fluffs respond well to positive reinforcement.
Perhaps I'm the next Monster Whisperer?

This little fellow found a new home really quickly, but The Keeper promised me there would be many more. I hope she's right...I'm kind of wanting one to keep for myself!

A Teensy Friend

A new friend followed me home from Target today!

Isn't she the cutest?

I think I'll have to go back soon to see if I'm lucky enough to have another one follow me home!
