Autumn

I know that fall officially started back in September, but it's only just now feeling like it here.

I've never really cared for fall.
It always felt like a sad time to me.
Plus, I'm not much of a fan of cold weather.

Of course, it probably didn't help that my previous jobs were always so terribly busy during the fall.
I never actually had a chance to enjoy it.

I mentioned my feelings about fall to Sparkle.
I was curious what sort of fae wisdom she would have about it.

"Fall not beez sadmost. It beez a time of change."

"If it waz sadmost, why would the trees getz all prettied up for it?"

I liked looking at it that way.
A few minutes passed, both of us silently enjoying the pretty weather.

"Plus, dese pumpkins taste goodmost."

I had to agree with her on that one.
I do enjoy all the pumpkin flavored goodies.

And come to think of it...there's a jar of pumpkin butter waiting in the fridge for us to enjoy.

A Little Reminder...

Sometimes it's okay to just take the day off...

Sit back and relax.
Enjoy the little things.

The other stuff can wait.

And who knows?
Perhaps you'll find a little faerie to enjoy the day with.

A Little Discovery

Sparkle and I continued our walk to the far side of the yard, where the large shade tree sits.

Sparkle gasped.
"Ohhh, dis beez a specialmost tree!"

Now, I had always liked this great big tree with its branches that filled the entire back corner of the yard, but I was curious to know what she found so special about it.

"Look, right dere. It haz a heart. Only specialmost trees have heartses."

I am ashamed to admit that I never once had noticed that heart. She was right, there must be something truly special about this tree.

Sparkle and I were happily admiring the tree's heart when we heard a sound (okay, she heard the sound first. I am the "slow guardian" here, after all).
It was a very small sound, but it was so very sad.

"It beez comings from de udder side of de tree."

I'm sure you can only imagine my surprise when I discovered the cause of the sound.

Huddled up against the Heart Tree, was a tiny little faerie.

The poor little thing was crying.

I didn't wish to frighten her, so I very slowly bent down and asked her what was wrong.

"I waz on me way to a newmost home....a specialmost home for meez to live, but I got losted. And nows I's all alone."

I thought perhaps we could help her, and was just asking her where her new home was, when Sparkle rolled her eyes at me and let out a huge sigh.
Apparently, I am exasperatingly slow.

"She waz coming to liveses with US."

I was pretty shocked by this news. Sparkle had told me before she was to be an "only fae." I asked her if she was ok with having another little faerie around the house.

"When a faerie beez called specialmost to a home, not even I'Z can stopses it. She just belongsmost with us."

That seemed good enough to me. Besides, who am I to argue with fae logic?

I asked our new little friend if she had a name.

"I beez Glimmer."

The "Magicmost" Woods

Today was one of those rare days where the weather is just perfect.
Typically, it's either terribly hot and humid or bitter cold.

I wanted to take advantage of the day, and enjoy some time in my back yard.

Of course, Sparkle had to come along.
She was happily perched on my finger, listening as I told her about my favorite corner of the yard, which I had always called "The Woods."

I explained I knew this corner wasn't really anything in comparison to a real forest.
It was really just a handful of trees, but I had always felt so alive among them.
These trees gave me the same feeling I feel even when I'm deep in the "real" woods.

"Of course dis beez a real forest," she replied.
"And you'ze feel so alivemost beecuz it is a magicmost forest."

Magic? I knew my little fae must be teasing me.
I had spent many, many hours among these trees, and never once had I seen anything magical.
Magic forests were for places far away, across the oceans. Not somewhere as ordinary as my backyard.
I was curious (and probably a bit hopeful) though, so I asked her if any magical creatures lived here.

"Of course dey do. What wouldz a magicmost wood beez without magic folkses? Just look over heres...How can you t'ink dere not somet'ink magicmost living in dis tree?"

She did have a point.

"De signs beez everywheres. You'ze just haz to look."

I was quite excited now, and asked why they wouldn't come out and join us.

"Dey don't t'ink you'ze readymost yet."

I was pretty disappointed with this news, but at least it was promising. If I wasn't ready "yet," that at least meant I might be one day.

We continued on with our walk, Sparkle now pointing out all the evidence of magical creatures to me.

A Very Special Arrival with The Keeper

Hello all.
If you've been following this blog, you'll know me as "The Keeper."
I always promised that I would leave this blog strictly to my dolls to run, but today I decided to make an exception. (This is also the very first time I've ever done a "box opening." This arrival is quite special!)

(As a side note, you'll have to forgive me for Pastel's lack of updates this summer. She has had stories to share, but I have not given her the time she needed to share them. With this new arrival, I imagine that will change.)

Today I had a very special package arrive at my doorstep. For a long time, I thought this day would never come.

I'll back up a little though in order to explain why this package was so meaningful to me.
(Confession: I'm a bit shy about sharing this story with you all. I'm trying to convince myself that if you're a visitor of this blog,  you must also be a "doll person" and you will get where I'm coming from with all this.)

When I was in grade school, I was a dreamer. I always had my "head in the clouds." I created this whole little world in my head, and I was constantly drawing the fantastic creatures and beings that lived in it. It was my little escape, and it made me so happy.

And then one night nearly a decade ago, something terrible happened. It was so terrible, it completely shattered me. I was a different person for several years after. I lost so many people that were once close to me during this time. I felt like everything was spiraling out of my control. The worst part? My little world, my special place, vanished. For years, I stopped drawing completely. I couldn't create anything. I was completely lost.

Life isn't always like a fairytale. Something didn't happen to magically bring me back. Things slowly improved as time passed. I began to pick up the pieces again. During this time, I got married, bought a house, and had a beautiful son. Even still, I was missing something important.

In October of 2009, just a few months after my son was born, I taught myself to sew a plushie. That was the first step at truly recovering myself. It was the first time in a long time that I created anything. It was through the crafting sites that I discovered the world of BJD's, and of course, Den of Angels.

I had always loved dolls. My room used to be filled with porcelain dolls (that were sadly all put away when my teenage self deemed them "uncool"). These ball jointed dolls were like none I had ever seen before. I was eager to read everything about them. I spent hours and hours reading the discussion threads of DoA.

And that's when I discovered a little thread about Charles' Creature Cabinet Fireflies.
I was sucked in immediately. Here was a community of people that remembered how to play. There was something about this thread that was unlike any of the other doll threads I had read. It was like entering a magical world. And that's when something truly amazing (for me, at least) happened. I pulled out my dusty sketchbook and drew a picture of a firefly. I desperately wanted this doll that had inspired such a fantastic community, and that at long last had inspired me.

Unfortunately, I was just a few months too late. It was at this point that CCC started having issues with getting dolls out. I won't go into the details as I imagine many of you reading this already know it. I was heartbroken not only for myself, but even more so for all the poor people that were out so much money. I silently watched as this amazing community rallied together and managed to get many of these dolls to their rightful homes. It was truly a wonderful thing to see.

I watched several fireflies go up for sale as time passed. With each one, my heart sank a little more. They were selling second hand for stunning prices. I think the first one I saw was in the six hundred dollar range, and the next in the nine hundred, with one even going into the thousands. I knew there was no chance I would bring home a firefly.

I went back to ghosting the firefly thread. It took me nearly three years to finally join in, by the way. The community had come to mean so much to me, that I was terrified if I joined, I would spoil the magic. I had already tried to join a different doll discussion, and had had a negative experience. I couldn't bear the thought of losing sight of this magical little world this little doll had inspired.

When rumors started that Grace at JPOP was going to produce the fireflies again, I was beyond thrilled. Finally, here was just the tiniest glimmer of hope. It took awhile even after that, but that hope was enough for me. I put every spare penny and dollar I could find into a jar so that when the dolls went up for sale, I would have the money. I must've been one of the first orders placed, because I checked out the second I got the announcement!

And that brings me to today, and the arrival of a very long awaited little doll. She may be "just a doll" for many, but she represents so much more to me. I will always look at her and be reminded of the wonderful little community that inspired me to create once again. In the years that passed after I discovered that firefly faerie thread, I have started drawing and painting again, I have created countless plush, and have even started my own little business selling my creations.

And so, I am so very happy to introduce you to Sparkle.

May she always remind me to never again let anyone (or anything) dull my sparkle.

(Confession: Yes, I got teary eyed as I did this very long awaited box opening.)
